Flaking

I have a problem that I need to rant about, so forgive me for a little bit! As most of you know, I hosted a Vintage Christmas Swap; my first time as hosting, even though I've been in several swaps. I expected the first time to be small, and it was - only 3 of us. But what I didn't expect was for one of the participants to "flake" on their partner (participating in a swap without sending a package to your partner)! I accepted this person into the swap on good faith, even though it was her first time swapping (which I didn't find out until later), and she had no blog. I didn't have a blog either when I first started swapping. That's why I created this blog. However, I never expected her to not follow thru and leave her partner hanging. I gave her plenty of opportunities to let me know if she was having any problems and contacted her several times asking for the Delivery Confirmation number, which I never got. She finally stopped answering my emails. I "angeled" her partner (created a package for her), but her partner should never have gone thru this in the first place, especially with only 3 of us!

I would like to have more swaps and hope that more people participate, but one thing I will not tolerate is "flaking" Not only is it wrong, it's against the rules of the swapping community! I understand that things come up or stuff happens. If so, let the hostess and your partner know this. But if you're in it for the stuff you get, with no intention of following thru, then don't participate! This is something I will not tolerate! I will ban all "flakers" and list them for others to see, so be forewarned!

Secret Santa Swap

Well, as I said, my Secret Santa Swap package arrived today, and I was so excited about the items I got! I've been spoiled! With this one, we had certain rules to follow and one was we had to buy a gift for each letter of a word pertaining to Christmas, like SNOW or SANTA, etc. My secret partner, who by the way was Tammy Simpkins, chose the word MAGIC: M= mug, A=apron, G=gingerbread cookie mix, I= icing and C=cocoa. Plus, she put in a book and an ornament. I think I'm going to have to make some of the cocoa and get started on that book. It's exactly the kind I like to read! Vintage Christmas Swap Goodies Arrived!

Well, today I got not one, but two packages - one from Linda for the Vintage Christmas Swap and the other from my secret Santa, which I will put in another post. Here is the box from Linda:

And here are all the goodies she sent! I was definitely pampered!

Let's see, I got a stuffed snowman (who I absolutely adore!), some vintage Christmas cards, a Christmas pillow, Gingerbread candles, crocheted hot pads, Lindor Truffles (again, which I absolutely adore!), some earrings, a Christmas cloth, and a lucky charm for my pocket! The Cookies Have Arrived!

When I got back from shopping today, there was a package on my doorstep. The cookies from the Cookie Exchange had arrived! I was so excited and couldn't wait to open it. Here's a picture of all the containers.

Attached to each one were the recipes. I admit, I was a pig and sampled one of each! They were all good. Here's a picture of the cookies:

I also got a cute ornament and a box of Lindor Chocolate Truffles, my favorite! Here are the names of the cookies that came:

Snowballs, Fudgy Brownie Cups, Holiday Red Raspberry Chocolate Bars, German Chocolate Coconut Bars, White Christmas Cookies and one that didn't have a recipe, but had jelly in the middle. Yummm! The ones I made were called Gingerbread Spice Bars.

I couldn't have done this without the help of my good friend, Hope. Thank you so much for everything! They turned out great!

Donny & Marie Concert

The concert was phenomenal! We were 10 rows from the stage and seats 3 & 4 from the aisle they kept going down. They showed old videos on a huge screen throughout the show - videos from concerts, TV specials/shows, etc. I have to admit, I cried during the whole thing! I couldn't believe I was actually there! They even showed the video "Just Like A Yo-Yo", with Donny and the stage dancers doing the same steps. He's in his 50's and was still able to keep up! It was just an incredible experience that I don't think I will soon forget! Till next time! Mary Jo

Concert

Christmas Swaps

Well, I'm bummed! I want to take part in a Christmas Swap this year, and can't find any! They all seem to have ended in Oct. or the first week of Nov. I enjoy being in these swaps and look forward to them every year, but am really disappointed this year. Didn't get to do it last year because we were so busy moving. Craft Show This Weekend

Well, this weekend is the big craft show everyone's been talking about. I'm going to be a vendor there; the first time there, so I hope the stories are true! I've been real busy making all kinds of crafts for the show. Then I have another show the following weekend. There's so much to remember, but most important is that I don't get nervous! Christmas Is On It's Way!

Since we want to have easy accessibility to our Christmas things, we are busy transferring boxes from the garage and storage unit, to the attic. Plus, I think we're going to buy an artificial pre-lit tree this year. Ours is 23 years old, so it's time to wish it goodbye and welcome a new one! Because we've lived in a small place, we never had room for a tree, so this will be an exciting Christmas this year! Just have to decide on the size as it's still a small area.

I'm going to decorate with my friend, who lives in Virginia, the Sat. after Thanksgiving. We're going to set a time to start and a time to take a break. Then we'll email pictures of what we've accomplished so far, while taking a hot chocolate break. I've done this before and it's a lot of fun and a way to be close to those who live far away! Halloween Craft Pictures

Scrabble words

The Scrabble words are real easy to make. Just select your word, glue the letters together, then glue to a piece of foam or mat board that covers the back. This gives them stability. I also made a loop for hanging and stuck that in before I glued the backing.

ornaments

These were also easy to make. I painted wooden clothespins (the ones with the round head) different colors. Took a piece of chenille and wrapped it once around the bottom of the round head. Spread the "arms" out like in the picture. Then I found some pictures on the internet. Printed them off and glued them to some large buttons. Then I glued the buttons to the clothespin so that it covered the round heads and neck of the clothespins. There you have it! Now you're ready to hang them on your Halloween Tree!

Quilt Show

My Initial Made From Costume Jewelry

I made this using a styrofoam letter that I covered the edges with vintage pink velvet ribbon. Then I glued an assortment of costume jewelry all over it. I then glued it down onto some cardboard covered with wallpaper, placed it in a frame and walla! My initial! I think it turned out great and it wasn't hard at all to do. Just a little time consuming, trying to fit all the jewelry together and cover up any blank places. I think it looks great in the black frame. Makes the color of the jewelry sparkle!

Closing An Old Blog (Not This One)!

Quilt Show

I've been busy working on my paintings, getting ready for a local quilt show. Hope I do better than I did at the craft show! Of course, the rain had a lot to do with it. Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub

Here is a great recipe for all you gardeners, and even those with just dry skin. It works really great! It's called Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub, and I always keep a jar of it next to the sink. I even use it in the bath and like I said, it really works great! It also makes a great gift!

(This mixture will make enough to fill a 12 oz. mason jar and you'll have just enough left over to clean your hands afterwards, too)
2 1/2 cups of sugar
1 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4 Tablespoons of Lemon Juice

Mix the sugar with the oil, then add the lemon juice. MIx really well until a gritty paste forms; spoon into a 12 oz. mason jar and seal with lid. After sitting for awhile you may need to mix prior to using, as the sugar may settle. A tiny bit is all you need and it leaves your skin extra soft and smooth!

Cool Breezes!

What a lovely time it has been these last few days! The temp. has dropped into the 70's; it even got down to 52 last night! Perfect weather. I know some of you are just baking in the heat. I hope we're passed that and you will be soon, too. In the meantime, I've been busy getting ready for a craft show this Sunday. I've created something new and have been busy as a bee making them. Very time consuming. Don't want to make too many, though, in case they don't sell. I'll post some pictures later. Then next month I'm going to be a vendor at a local quilt show, so hopefully I'll sell some of my paintings. Keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer for me! I need all the help I can get!! Craft Show Canceled

Well, it looks like I won't be a vendor at the local craft show, due to the heat wave we're having. I never expected this - who knew the heat wave would last so long? But I get real sick from the heat and it just wasn't worth it. So, I'll list my items on Etsy and see if they'll sell there. In the meantime, I'll keep looking to see if I can find another craft show, but the closest one I've found isn't until the end of Sept. In a way, that's good because it's not hot then. Harry Potter Movie

Another Yard Sale

Spent the weekend having another yard sale. Did pretty good, but not as good as we'd have liked. It rained most of Friday, so we weren't open very long. Did better on Saturday. Have lots of boxes of books, which we're going to donate either to the library or Goodwill. I think we're thru with yard sales for awhile, thank goodness! This one was really tough. We had so much stuff we couldn't put it all out at once, due to not enough room! Except for Friday, the weekend was really nice. Hope you all had a great weekend!

I've been sick for the past several days with a cold that has turned into a sore throat, which feels like it is turning into where you can't talk! Jewelry & Snow

Found a new store that was willing to take some of my jewelry pieces on consignment. Yes, it's the horse tack shop, so she was only interested in the pieces that looked western. that meant most of the turquoise pieces. She did take one my husband made from a petoskey stone, that had a couple of turquoise dangly pieces. I have 60 days to see how they do. Mine were definitely different from what was there. We'll see.

Woke up that morning to snow! Couldn't believe it! Middle of April, warm weather, than a cold snap and snow! This is definitely crazy weather!

We are finally all moved in. That doesn't mean all the boxes are unpacked and everything is where it belongs, though. But we're getting there. We have plans to take advantage of several city sponsored yard sales this year, as well as a few of our own. Too much stuff! Till next time! Mary Jo

Jewelry Anyone?

Well, I just got thru listing a lot of jewelry on my Etsy site. Hope you get a chance to go there and look at them. There's a link on my blog. Heck, buy, buy, buy!!!!!! lol Stopped by a store in town yesterday to see if they might be interested, but they only deal with two jewelers. It was worth a try, though. We'll see how I do on Etsy.

Other than that, most of the unpacking is done, and we are just arranging and rearranging items. It'll take some getting used to. My sister has redone the kitchen twice already and I think she's about ready for a third! We can't unpack the bathroom because there is no storage in there at all. Hubby's going to try and make shelves in the hall closet so we can use that. In the meantime, we've been shopping looking for something to use - shelf, cabinet, small table, etc. So far, no luck. We'll keep looking. It's finally warming up so now we can start working outside and put the garden shed together. It'll be interesting to see what flowers come up. Till next time! Mary Jo

Remember all the jewelry I've been making lately to take to this local store? They were looking for people who made jewelry. Well, my mistake was that I didn't listen well enough. They're a tackle shop for horses and are looking for jewelry that would appeal to horse people. I got so excited about hearing "new shop needing jewelry", that I didn't hear the rest, and I got busy making jewelry, none of which can be used at that store. I could just kick myself! What am I going to do with all this jewelry? I wonder if any of the stores downtown would be interested in them? I'll also put them on Etsy, but Etys's been real slow lately. Winter Storm

Here are some pictures of the winter storm we had. The weather had been so nice and warm and then bammm!! we get slammed with 6 inches of snow and ice! It's supposed to go into the 40's next week so I guess all the snow will still be around until then. We were able to get several truck loads of our stuff out before the storm hit, which was good; still have a couple more to get then we're done! It'll be great to have all these boxes unpacked and everything put away, but that's going to take a while. I know one thing for sure....we're having a huge yard sale! Not everything is going to fit! The Purple Room!

Here is a picture of my sister's purple room! It took 2 coats of kilz and 2 coats of paint with primer in it to cover that dark purple! But it was worth it, as it turned out great!

Almost Moved In!

The movers came today and moved almost all of our furniture for us. We've moved a lot of the boxes ourselves, so we're able to spend the night in the new house. Good thing, too, as we're supposed to get 7" of snow tonight! Can't wait for winter to be over!! Anyway, everything went well, and the movers even got done ahead of schedule, saving us some money. That always helps! We went back and picked up a few things needed for the next few days and brought the dogs back with us. They aren't too comfortable being here, thinking we're not staying. Because the fence needs repairs, and both dogs are runners, we have to attach them to zip lines until the ground is warmer and we can make repairs. Since they both want out constantly, I can see this getting old real fast!! It's been a loooong day, so I'm off to bed. Till next time! Mary Jo

New Photos

I have new photos to show you of the house. Please excuse the mess, but I couldn't wait to share them with you, so it shows we're still a work in progress. Almost done, though. Cable is being installed tomorrow, movers come with the furniture on thursday and we bring everything else on Sunday. Whew!! It'll be good to have it all done! Tomorrow I'll put a second coat of paint on the trim in my sister's room, then I'm done with painting! If I'm not a nervous wreck at the end of the move, then I can handle anything!! Here's some comparison pictures. The first is of the bathroom. It's so much brighter!

This next one shows the pantry we put in the kitchen. It really looks great and adds a lot of storage! We're thinking of putting in an island instead of a table to sit at. What do you think?

Almost Done!

We are working hot and heavy at the new house, even though it is cold and snowy out! But, we are finally in the home stretch on getting the painting done! (Good thing, too, cause we're moving in this week). The living room and bathroom turned out beautifully!! Better than we could have done. And the bathroom is so bright now, compared to how dingy and dark it was before. I really debated over doing it in white, but it turned out great. Finished up the trim in the kitchen yesterday. Never got the ceiling done. Oh, well! Just have the trim in my sister's rooms to do. Hopefully we can get that done today, but we won't be able to get the wainscoting up that she wants before the movers come. We'll have to work on that later.

We're having the movers bring all of our heavy furniture and then we'll bring all the rest. We're getting too old to lift some of these pieces!

Last week we also had the pantry installed in the kitchen and it looks fabulous! I'll try to take a picture of it today, along with some of the other rooms. Gotto go! Till next time! Mary Jo

Painting

Here are some before and after pictures. The first is of the master bedroom. it's hard to tell, but it was painted a lime green. We repainted it a light beige with white trim. Again, hard to tell.

The second set is of my studio, which had each wall painted a different pastel color. I repainted it a soft dusty white color. I still have to paint the trim.

The third set is of the kitchen which was wallpapered. We ripped out the wallpaper, except for one wall, and painted the rest of the walls the same as the master bedroom - a light beige. The rest of the house will be painted this light beige, with white trim. However, the angle doesn't show the color very good - makes it look rosy, but it's the same color as the bedroom. I'll try to take it from a different angle next time. Forgot to paint the ceiling before we painted the walls in the kitchen, so we have to figure out how to do it without getting paint on the walls.

We have someone coming in Monday to professionally do the Living room and bathroom. Sunday we're going to concentrate on my sister's rooms and get them done. Soon it will all be done and we can get moved in!! Till next time! Mary Jo

Painting Has Begun!

We've been getting quotes from various painters to paint the interior of the house, and the prices have been way beyond our small budget. So, it looks like we'll have to do it ourselves (groan!). We've been busy prepping the walls - filling holes, sanding, scraping paint, washing the walls, caulking, etc. After agonizing over the color for days, I just closed my eyes and plowed right in! Some friends graciously gave up their time yesterday to come over and help us paint; we can never thank them enough! There are still rooms to do, but the ones that are done look great! I'll take pictures soon, so you can see before and after. Found out I was also doing the painting the hard way; my friends showed me an easier and faster way with no bending over or the constant climbing up and down of the ladder! Thank you dear friends! Storm Is Gone, Back To Work!

Well, the storm of the century has come and gone! We got less than we were expecting, around 18”, but still enough that it took us a couple of days before we could get out. The snow is so deep that it’s taller than the dogs and they have built trails all around the yard. The snowplow came just in time for hubby to get to work. Once he made it to the main road, it was smooth sailing all the way to town! We spent the time working in the old house, packing and cleaning and being lazy. Mostly just enjoying the storm. Here is a picture of our fence that's about 36" high, and some icicles. The snow is up to the bottom of the windows.

Finally made it to the new house after a couple of days and got right to work on the kitchen. DH is off most of this week so we intend to spend it working at the new house. Hope to get the kitchen cleaned, wallpaper down and the prep work finished for painting. Maybe even get started on some of the painting. Had an estimate to have part of the house painted (we’re talking about 1000 sq. ft) and that came to over $2300! Too much for our small budget. So I’m just going to have them do the kitchen, LR and bathroom; we’ll do the bedrooms. Since we don’t have to be out of our current house by any specific time, we can take our time doing this. It’ll sure look nice when it’s done!

It has come to my attention that the other blogs I have are not seeing much traffic. These are for my craft projects and my paintings. I’m thinking of moving them into this blog, so people can see some of my creations. What do you think? Just go to my other blogs and look around and tell me if you think I should combine them or leave them separate. Thanks for your opinions! They mean a lot! I’ve been doing some tweeking to the blog, trying to clean it up a bit. I guess you could call it some early spring cleaning! And The Work Begins!

Today is a busy day. We have the house de-winterized, several electricians are coming to give us bids on updating the system, a couple of painters are coming to give us bids, prep work for the painting will be started and cleaning will begin. Not to mention the continuous movement of furniture templates. See, before we started our house hunting, I measured all our pieces of furniture and wrote them down. Then I cut them out of brown paper (you could use any kind. It’s what I had a lot of), according to their general length and width. Then we lay these where we think we want the furniture to go until we’re satisfied, then we place the furniture there. It’s a lot easier than moving the actual furniture several times until you find the right place! I used to do this when we were in the military and we moved a lot (18 times in 28 years!), and it really helped a lot! So, we have some brown pieces of paper all over the house and I’ve already determined that the layout I wanted for the living room isn’t going to work. So, I need to rearrange some more.

The hubs is finally getting a den. He has wanted one for a long time, but it’s never worked out and he’s never complained. Well, he’s finally getting his own room in this house. It will soon be filled with all his paraphernalia and I’ve been told I’m not to touch any of it! Except to have his room painted. Man cave! He’s a good man putting up with 2 women so I don’t mind.

I think the craft room is going to work out ok. I took some measurements yesterday and laid down some templates and it looks like the important pieces will fit. I will have to put my paint cabinet (an old library card catalog) in the living room, though. The room will be a tight fit, but it should work, especially if I fill the closet with shelves. The House Is Ours!

We have a new house! After almost a year of searching and heartache, we finally have a new house! I am overwhelmed. Especially with all that needs to be done now - cleaning, painting, packing, moving, unpacking, rearranging, more rearranging....the list seems endless. But I know we have time to work on it and nothing needs to be done right away, except the cleaning. And painting. And the packing. Oh, and the moving and unpacking. I guess that just leaves rearranging? LOL Oh, well, it will all come together as it should, when it should! First things first...utilities are on so that means we can get in and start cleaning. Then tackle the painting before moving everything in. Figure it'll be a lot easier that way. I have a lot of ideas running thru my head and I'm eager to get started on them! Should make for some interesting posts.

We Have A Closing Date!

Well, we finally have a closing date on our new home (next week), so now we can start to get our life together instead of living in limbo. Some of the rooms have packed boxes in them, which have been like that for several months after we thought we were going to get a couple of other houses. But our agent assured us that nothing can stop the closing now, so I guess the house is ours. Sorry if I don't sound too excited. Have been down this road too many times over the past few months, only to have it taken away from us. In fact, we almost lost this one yesterday when our insurance backed out at the last minute, leaving us to scramble around looking for another insurance agency. Luckily we were able to find one and the sellers agreed to an extension without penalties. So, I guess this house is meant to be ours! Now the fun part begins - moving!!! Till next time! Mary Jo

I've talked about it before, in fact all summer long, but not lately for fear of jinxing it. But it looks like it's safe to let the secret out. We're moving! We've actually been looking at houses since about April, and have put in offers on a few of them. But due to one thing or another, they all fell thru. Needless to say, we have not been in a good mood over this! We finally decided to stop talking about it until we were fairly certain we were going to get a house (heard that before). However, it looks like this house is ours. Our realtor called today and told us to have the utilities transferred into our name for the end of next week, which is when we're supposed to close (don't have a closing date yet). I think it's safe to start dreaming about this house and making plans, picking out paint color and rearranging the rooms in my mind. Moving in winter is not an ideal time to do it, but at least we're moving! We don't have to be out of our current place by any set date, so it gives us time to get the new place cleaned and painted before we move in. I hope to blog about some of the improvements we will be doing, along with some of the craft projects I've tried. In the spring we hope to build me another studio, so I'll have to make do with one of the bedrooms until then. All in all, it should make for some interesting posts! Winter Wonderland!

I awoke to about 4" of fresh snow this morning, with thick, fluffy flakes still falling. Since I don't have to go anywhere, it's really beautiful!! The dogs had a great time running around the backyard. And they sure do like making their "snow angels"! Enjoy your day! Mary Jo

What I've Been Working On Today

Thought I'd show you what I've been working on today. It's either for my Etsy site or for the businesses in town. Either way, I've been busy! They're birdhouses made from PC pipe (wrapped in brick fabric) and real shingles. Then I jazzed them up with costume jewelry. The picture doesn't do them justice, but I think they turned out great and I had a lot of fun making them! what do you think? Opinions appreciated! I think I'll go make some more!! Till next time! Have You Recovered?

Has everyone recovered from the holidays? I should be in cleaning mode but instead I'm in creating mode. When the creating juices hit, you just have to go with it! Even though we're going to be moving soon, and I should be packing. But since we don't have to be out of here by a certain date, I have time. And a lot of the packing is already done. I know, I know. It was a pain trying to find some of the Christmas decorations, so we only put up a table top tree. And don't even get me started on my studio. It seems as soon as I finished packing all the non-essential items, that's when the creative juices hit and I needed them! But I remember which box they're in....It's marked "studio"!! Except they're all marked "studio"! Oh, well! Only a few more weeks and it should all be over and life will be back to normal. Well....as normal as it gets around here! lol Chat with you soon! How Was Your Christmas?

Well, Christmas has come and gone. Was it everything you hoped it would be? Was Santa good to you this year? Have you started working on things for next Christmas? Say, what?! Yes, I admit I'm one of those people who starts her Christmas shopping the day after Christmas. Of course, I have to hit all the bargains and clearances, so I stock up on wrapping paper, cards and ribbons. But I'm also looking for other bargains, and continue to do so all year long. It really helps out at the end of the year, so I'm not rushing around spending a ton of money. And my husband appreciates that! Although, I have to let you in on a little secret.... I'm getting a slow start to this year's shopping. I just can't seem to get myself dressed and out into the cold weather. Maybe tomorrow it'll be warmer! Hope you have a great day! Let's see, tree decorated? check!
Shopping done? check!
Presents wrapped? check!
Baking done? no, but don't need it, so check!
Christmas carols playing? check!
Christmas cards done? check!
Decorations up? check!

Can't think of anything else so I deserve to grab a good book and just relax. Or maybe I'll just stare at the tree with carols softly playing in the background. What I'll probably do, though, is take a nap! Ahhh, the votes are in and a nap it is! Talk to you later! Mary Jo

Christmas Is Coming!!

It's hard to believe that Christmas is only 5 days away. I wish I had more time! But in the back of my mind, I'm saying "No I don't. I see those presents under the tree. I wonder what's in them?! And since it's just Gary and Me (technically), I know which ones are for me. I can't wait to open them!!!" I know, I know....I'm bad! :) LOL

One of the things I enjoy doing is getting up just before dawn, turning on the tree and watching the day begin. Sometimes it's snowing out or the cardinals are gathering at the feeder. It's so quiet and peaceful. Of course, another thing I enjoy doing is going into the stores late on Christmas Eve! Don't ask me why, I have no idea! We don't buy anything, just walk around. But it's something we started doing a few years ago. Then we drive around and look at the decorated houses on the way home.

Relax and enjoy your Christmas, however crazy your traditions may be! Mary Jo

Pecan Pie Muffins

While surfing the internet, I came across this recipe for Pecan Pie Muffins, by Christy at “from glitter to gumdrops.” They looked pretty good, and my sweet tooth was acting up, so I decided to make some. Oh…My…God!!! These are to die for! They are so simple to make and definitely satisfied my sugar craving! You have to try these; you won’t regret it! Don’t forget to check out Christy’s site for more great recipes and wonderful craft ideas! I especially like the banana split on a stick! Here’s the recipe for the pecan pie muffins:

Ingredients:
2/3 cups softened butter
2 eggs
1 cup brown sugar (not packed)
1 cup crushed pecans
½ cup flour
3 Tablespoons butter (set aside)

Directions:
1. Blend butter and eggs (because my butter wasn’t soft enough, I used my mixer on low.)
2. Add in the rest of ingredients (except the 3 Tablespoons of butter), just until combined.
3. Pour into 9 greased muffins.
4. Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees.
5. After removing from oven, add a bit of butter to the top of each muffin and let it melt. Eat hot or cold! Enjoy! Mary Jo

First Snowfall!

It’s Nov. 5 and we are experiencing our first snowfall of the season. Nothing is sticking as the ground’s too warm, but it’s nice watching the fluffy flakes fall lazily to the ground. Soon we’ll be complaining about the snow and cold, but right now it’s peaceful! What a beautiful sight!
